Howard, Philip, 1st Earl Of Arundel

Howard, Philip, 1st Earl Of Arundel
(1557-1595)
He was the eldest son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, who was executed for high treason in 1572 (see also Howard, Henry). On the death of his maternal grandfather, the 12th earl, in 1580 he became Earl of Arundel (Arundel Castle is in West Sussex). At Cambridge University he did little work, but was awarded an M.A. in 1576. He led a merry life at the court of Queen Elizabeth but was never the Queen's favorite. Received into the Roman Catholic faith in 1584, in 1585 he was apprehended, tried on the charge of being a Romanist and attempting to leave England without the queen's consent. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London for the rest of his life while his wife lived in poverty. He was refused permission to see his wife and son unless he recanted, which he refused. He was buried in the chapel of the Tower; his remains were later conveyed to Arundel. His known publications: An Epistle of Jesus Christ to the Faithful Soule, 1595. A Foure-Fould Meditation, 1605. In the Wrackes of Walsingham, 1868.
